Our History
|
By God's grace, the Chinese Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles (CEFC) has been serving in the Monterey Park area since 1974 to multiply Disciples of Christ among all people. Over the years, CEFC, a member of the family of Evangelical Free churches, has seen many blessings, protection and guidance from God to move towards being a healthy, Biblically based and witnessing church to the glory of God.

In 1960 a group of foreign students formed a Bible study group and had met regularly until 1964 when they were incorporated into the First Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles as their Chinese department. CEFC was incorporated as an independent church on November 23rd, 1973 and subsequently moved to Monterey Park as the place of worship in 1974. God has been gracious in His provision by multiplying the number of believers at CEFC. The Church started as a single language Cantonese group and for a while, the Church held Chinese-English bilingual service until 1975 when the English service was separately held. The Mandarin service was added in 1976. Currently the Church serves a regular attendance of around 800.

God enabled the Church to purchase the Markland House in Monterey Park in 1976, and later in the year, the Church purchased the land at 1111, South Atlantic Boulevard which was to be the current address of the Church. The construction of the church buildings began in 1978 in different phases and was finally completed with the use of the new sanctuary in April of 1993. During this period of building construction, the Church has continually grown in size and her outreach ministries including Chinese Language Program, Graceland Day Care and support of church planting ministries. Today the Church continues to emphasize caring of and reaching out to the community through ministries like homeless ministry, ESL classes and foreign student ministries.

Many faithful pastors were called by God to shepherd and equip the Body of Christ. There is much to be thankful for including the pastors who had served faithfully and unreservedly to multiply followers of Christ. Amongst them, there were those who had led the Church as founding or Senior Pastors, Samuel Lo, Pak Fai Chan, Daniel Lau, Fred Cheung and John Hsu (present). Those who had served as interim or acting Senior Pastors were Joseph Tong, Anthony Tsang, Hoover Wong and Henry Chou.
